Lifelong learning networks (LLNs) are a HEFCE initiative to improve progression to HE for vocational learners. You can find out more about LLNs on the HEFCE website and the LLN Practitioner Forum website.
Recent attempts to widen the participation of home students in HE in the UK have not made any significant difference to the diversity of the student body.
Visual arts is one of the least diverse disciplines, a characteristic shared by the Performing Arts. This lack of diversity is particularly important because of the scale and importance of the Creative Industries to the Economy.
We believe that HE Art, Design and Performing Arts presents additional barriers to participation for working class young people. For example, the necessity of studying for an additional year on a Foundation Diploma before entering HE art and design, the requirement of a portfolio or audition as part of the selection process, and the additional cultural knowledge required to perform successfully at interview.
The NALN is addressing these issues within its member institutions, and its work is relevant to the HE arts sector more generally.
