In October 2008, the National Arts Learning Network (NALN) collaborated with the Council for Higher Education in Art and Design (CHEAD) and the Crafts Council to run a one-day seminar, Materials and Processes: The Future of the Craft of Making, at the British Library in London.

Speakers included Paul Coyle, Executive Dean at the University of the Creative Arts (UCA), Rosy Greenlees, Executive Director of the Crafts Council, who outlined the Craft Blueprint, an action plan intended to address the skills gaps in the craft sector across the UK, and Ian Farren, Head of the School of Art and Design at the University of Cumbria.
