NALN's Seminar Series was launched on the 25th June 2008 at the Royal College of Art, with the release of two major research reports by the Open University and the Institute for Employment Studies.
The reports, which were commissioned by the Royal College of Art and NALN, give an insight into the issues around widening participation to postgraduate study in the arts, an area which has hitherto received little attention.
'Creative Careers and Non-Traditional Trajectories', by Dr Stephanie Taylor and Professor Karen Littleton of the Open University, is a qualitative study investigating participants' experience and understanding of work and study pathways in Art and Design, and their perceptions of postgraduate level study as part of these pathways.
'Mapping Provision and Participation in Postgraduate Creative Arts and Design' by Emma Pollard, Helen Connor and Wil Hunt of the Institute for Employment Studies, is a quantitative study, giving a statistical analysis of the provision of postgraduate study in creative arts and design subjects across the UK, and participation in such study by learners from different backgrounds.
Mark Crawley, Director of NALN, said "In commissioning and disseminating these reports we aim to make a significant contribution to widening participation in postgraduate study in the creative arts. It is my hope that the arts higher education sector will respond quickly and effectively to the challenges identified by this research."
